The story

Madras accounts in 1683 count 36 fanams per pagoda. The 1717 general-book reform changes cash subdivisions within the account, rather than creating a new currency. [1]

A December 1766 list of Carnatic debts totals 2,229,650 Star pagodas, providing an explicit liability witness. [2]
